Bjarne Melgaard (born 1967, Sydney) is an Oslo-based artist known for his transgressive paintings and installations that draw upon the likes of gay club culture, S&M, AIDS and addiction. His expressionist drawings and paintings don’t shy from excess, taking on such themes with a deadpan and hyperpersonal clarity.
Melgaard’s works are held in numerous public collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain, Strasbourg; and Moderna Museet, Stockholm.
He has participated in the Venice, Lyon and Whitney Biennials, and held important exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London as well as the Munch Museum, Oslo.
