Rebecca Morris (b. 1969, Honolulu, Hawaii) is a Los Angeles-based painter. Like an abstract cartography, her works are built from a lexicon of checkerboards, hooked claws, stepping blocks, and stylized grids and patterns. Working with thin paint and nuanced color, often overlaid with gold and silver spray paint, her perverse formalism pushes the boundaries of abstraction.
Combining both dry brush and fluid wet into and wet applications, this particular piece is an image of a work built through the layering of watercolor and ink on paper utilizing a resist.
Selected solo exhibitions include the Blaffer Art Museum, Houston; Bonnefanten Museum, Maastricht; Galerie Barbara Weiss, Berlin; Bortolami, New York and Institute of Contemporary Art Los Angeles. She was also featured in Made in L.A.: a, the though, only, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2016) and the Whitney Biennial (2014).
