Jenny Holzer (b. 1950) is an American Neo-Conceptualist. The main focus of her work is the delivery of words and ideas in public spaces, a key example of which is her series of Inflammatory Essays. The Essays were first conceived in 1979, when they were fly-pasted around NYC, and feature provocative and often contradictory statements inspired by the writings of communists, anarchists, religious and liberal thinkers as well as popular literature.
Holzer rose to fame in the 1980s as part of a generation of women artists breaking through the glass ceiling of the art world, including Barbara Kruger and Cindy Sherman. She was the first woman to represent the USA at the Venice Biennale in 1990, where she received the Golden Lion.
Major exhibitions include the Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin; Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston; Dia Art Foundation, New York; and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York.
